Insurance companies contact information for mental health providers is the set of provider-services phone numbers, contact pages and claims contractors a billing office uses to reach each payer. Quick answer: For a private plan, call the provider services number on the patient’s member ID card first. For mental health benefits, many plans route to a behavioral health company such as Optum, Evernorth or Carelon. Blue Cross and Blue Shield is a federation of independent companies, so each Blue plan has its own numbers.

Call the provider services number on the patient’s member ID card first. If the plan carves out behavioral health, the card or the plan’s provider portal points you to a company such as Optum (United Behavioral Health), Evernorth (Cigna) or Carelon. Why Calling Insurance Companies Takes More Time Than It Should
Every call starts with a phone menu and a hold. Then you get transferred, and the new number comes with no warning. Do you have a pen? Hopefully the call doesn’t drop on the way. Then you verify the same demographic and claim details again, and hope this is finally the right department. If it isn’t, you get transferred again.
Here is what to have in front of you before you dial:
- The name on the insurance card, date of birth and address (and hope they match what the insurer has), plus the provider’s NPI and tax ID

- Start with the member ID card. It names the plan and shows the number that routes to the right department.
- Identify the payer type. Private plan, Medicare or Medicaid decides which section to use.
- Use the portal first for claim status and eligibility, and the phone for escalations. Write down the date, the representative and the reference number.
