What Does a Mental Health Billing Service Do?

Mental health billing services: the insurance side, handled

A mental health billing service takes over the insurance side of a behavioral health practice: it confirms coverage, submits claims, follows up on denials and gets clinicians paid by each payer. MCM South does this only for mental and behavioral health. We do not bill for hospital systems, and we do not bill for other specialties.

Most practices outsource for one of three reasons: claims sit unworked, denials pile up, or the clinician is billing at night. Compare the two options in billing software vs. a billing service, or see how to choose a mental health billing company.

How our behavioral health billing services fit together

Behavioral health billing services in practice: a billing specialist and a therapist reviewing documents together at a desk

Behavioral health billing services cover every step between a session and a payment. MCM South handles those steps in order, only for psychotherapists and psychiatrists, and only in mental and behavioral health.

Professional claims go out on the CMS-1500 form on paper or as an 837P file electronically. CMS explains both in its Medicare Billing: CMS-1500 and 837P booklet. Each payer then adds its own rules, which is why verification and claim follow-up matter.

The right mental health billing services also depend on who you are. Psychotherapists bill outpatient psychotherapy codes. Psychiatrists bill medication management with evaluation and management (E/M) codes plus add-on psychotherapy codes. Our CPT & E/M Code Guide covers both, and the billing terms glossary defines the terms. See who we serve, or book a free consultation. Not sure which service to start with?
