Atlanta Mental Health Billing Service: 6 Easy Essentials

An Atlanta mental health billing service sends insurance claims for therapy and psychiatry practices, posts the payments and works denials. Metro Atlanta practices usually bill a mix of commercial plans, Medicare and Georgia Medicaid health plans, and each follows different rules. This guide lists six essentials to confirm before you hand off your billing.

What an Atlanta mental health billing service handles

An Atlanta mental health billing service covers the claim cycle from benefit check to denial follow-up. You keep clinical documentation and decisions. The payer type for each client sets the filing clock, the appeal path and who answers the phone. Our guide to mental health billing services for therapists splits the work between you and a service.

EssentialWhat to confirm
1. Payer typeCommercial, Medicare or a Georgia Medicaid plan, for each client
2. Medicaid planThe client’s plan on the date of service, through insurance verification
3. EnrollmentYour Georgia Medicaid revalidation status and Medicare enrollment
4. ClocksMedicare’s 12 months, Georgia’s payment deadlines and your contract terms
5. TelehealthWhether the plan pays video visits at the in-person rate
6. ReportsA monthly view of paid, denied and open claims

Payer rules an Atlanta mental health billing service keeps apart

Keep private, public and state rules in separate notes. A rule that fits one payer rarely fits another.

Private payers

Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield is the trade name of Blue Cross Blue Shield Healthcare Plan of Georgia, Inc., an independent licensee of the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, according to an Anthem press release from May 2025. Anthem’s provider site says Availity handles authorizations, claims and eligibility. Do not apply Anthem Georgia rules to another Blue plan.

UnitedHealthcare’s Georgia plans page lists commercial, Medicare Advantage and Community Plan (Medicaid) options, so one carrier can mean three rule sets. Keep payer lines in our insurance companies contact directory. If you are out of network with a plan, read out-of-network billing for therapists.

Medicare and Medicaid

Original Medicare claims from Georgia go to Palmetto GBA, the contractor for Jurisdiction J, which covers Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee, according to CMS. Medicare.gov says claims must be filed within 12 months of the service.

The Georgia Department of Community Health (DCH) groups counties into six Medicaid regions. Its region list puts Fulton, DeKalb, Cobb, Gwinnett, Clayton, Cherokee, Forsyth and Henry counties in the Atlanta region. DCH’s Georgia Families page names three care management organizations (CMOs): Amerigroup Community Care, CareSource and Peach State Health Plan.

DCH posted on April 23, 2026 that the Georgia Families procurement is in its protest phase and that it will extend the current CMO contracts through June 30, 2027.

Keep checking the plan on the card at every visit. Providers enroll through the Georgia Medicaid portal, which carries a May 25, 2026 notice that providers who have not revalidated are suspended for dates of service from July 1, 2026.

State rules

Code section 33-24-59.5 asks an insurer to pay or explain within 15 working days of an electronic claim and 30 days of a paper claim. Late payments carry 12 percent annual interest. An Office of Commissioner of Insurance (OCI) bulletin dated January 27, 2021 ties that section to quarterly claims reports from insurers.

OCI’s complaint page says providers can use its portal for claims problems with managed care insurers. Georgia’s telemedicine law, section 33-24-56.4, as changed by SB 118 effective January 1, 2020, requires payment for telemedicine at least at the in-person rate. Read your contract for exceptions.

How do I choose an Atlanta mental health billing service?

Choose an Atlanta mental health billing service that can name the payer types in your caseload, show how it tracks each filing clock and send a written report every month. Billing is electronic, so an Atlanta address matters less than Georgia payer knowledge. Ask for a sample report and a HIPAA business associate agreement before any client record moves.

What to do Monday morning

  1. Export your client list with each payer and plan type.
  2. Mark every Medicaid client and note the plan on the card.
  3. Log in to the Georgia Medicaid portal and confirm your revalidation status.
  4. Read an electronic remittance advice from your largest payer to see what it denied.
  5. Record your clean claim rate, then ask any Atlanta mental health billing service on your shortlist how it would raise it.

The short version: Atlanta mental health billing service

An Atlanta mental health billing service has to keep commercial, Medicare and Georgia Medicaid claims under their own rules. Confirm payer type, plan, enrollment and filing clock for each client, and get reports and fees in writing.
