Georgia Medicaid Provider Enrollment for Therapists and Psychiatrists

Therapist reviewing Georgia Medicaid provider enrollment steps with a client in an office

Georgia Medicaid provider enrollment is how a therapist or psychiatrist gets a Georgia Medicaid number so claims for Medicaid members can be paid. The Georgia Department of Community Health (DCH) runs the program, and you apply online. This guide walks through the steps, the separate plan credentialing that follows, and a 2026 revalidation rule that can suspend your number. Status is current as of October 15, 2026. Confirm each item on the official page before you act.

How Georgia Medicaid provider enrollment works

You enroll through the Georgia Medicaid MMIS portal, the state’s Medicaid claims and enrollment system. The application is a multi-step wizard. It saves after each step, and every step must be completed before you can submit. You must upload all required supporting documents first. See the enrollment wizard page for the current steps.

  • Basics: instructions, search, request type, provider and contract.
  • Specialty and services, then service locations.
  • Licensing and credentials: license, certification, education, training and work history.
  • Ownership and affiliations.
  • Background and staffing, which includes fingerprinting.
  • Financial and program details, then attestations.

DCH also posts the supporting forms on its enrollment forms page, including the W-9, the Disclosure of Ownership and Control Interest statement and the required-documentation coversheets. You will need your NPI (National Provider Identifier) and your state license details. Use these forms as the checklist for your Georgia Medicaid provider enrollment file.

Fees and what you need before you start

Under 42 CFR 455.460, individual physicians and non-physician practitioners are exempt from the Medicaid application fee, as are providers who already paid a Medicare contractor or another state’s Medicaid program, per the MMIS enrollment instructions. Plan for the background step. Gather these before you open the wizard: Keep this in mind at each Georgia Medicaid provider enrollment revalidation.

  • Your individual NPI and Georgia license number.
  • A completed W-9 and your banking details for payment.
  • Every practice location, because each office location needs its own Georgia Medicaid number, according to Peach State Health Plan’s behavioral health FAQ.
  • For community-based behavioral health services, a contract with the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD) and a staffing roster, per that same FAQ.

Medicaid enrollment does not carry over to Medicare. CMS says a provider needs a separate Medicare application through the Medicare enrollment process. Georgia Medicaid provider enrollment and Medicare enrollment are two separate applications.

Revalidation: the July 1, 2026 rule

DCH posted an alert on May 25, 2026. It says providers who have not revalidated are suspended effective July 1, 2026. Claims with dates of service on or after that date will not be paid. A suspended provider who does not revalidate within 30 days of the notice is terminated, with appeal rights. Retroactive enrollment is not allowed. Read the alert on the MMIS home page and check your revalidation status today. Revalidation is part of keeping your Georgia Medicaid provider enrollment active.

Georgia Families plans credential you separately

Medicaid enrollment does not put you in a plan’s network. Most Georgia Medicaid members are in a care management organization (CMO) under Georgia Families. DCH lists Amerigroup, CareSource and Peach State Health Plan as the current CMOs. See the Georgia Families news page, posted April 23, 2026. Georgia Medicaid provider enrollment and plan credentialing are two different steps.

Here is the process one CMO, Peach State, describes in its FAQ:

  1. Get your Georgia Medicaid number and NPI.
  2. Submit a credentialing application to the credentialing verification organization (CVO) through the MMIS portal.
  3. Complete the plan’s own network application.
  4. After the CVO approves you, the plan’s contracting team contacts you.

Each plan runs its own contracting, so confirm the steps with every CMO you want. Rules differ by plan, and credentialing takes time, so start early. Our guide to credentialing and network status explains the difference between being enrolled and being in-network. Keep your Georgia Medicaid provider enrollment details handy when you contact each plan.

What is changing in Georgia Medicaid

DCH says the CMO contract procurement is in the protest phase and it plans to extend the current CMO contracts through June 30, 2027, pending an award. Four plans were named in the December 2, 2024 notice of intent to award: CareSource, Humana, Molina and UnitedHealthcare. No transition date is posted yet. Recheck DCH before you rely on any Georgia Medicaid provider enrollment detail here.

Georgia Pathways to Coverage, the work-requirement program for adults, expires on December 31, 2026 unless renewed. A CMS letter dated September 25, 2026 says Georgia must apply the new federal community engagement requirement to Pathways starting January 1, 2027. See the CMS letter. Client coverage can change, so verify eligibility before every visit.

Medicaid timely filing is separate from Medicare and private insurers

Each payer sets its own filing deadline. Amerigroup’s Georgia Medicaid policy, effective June 3, 2025, sets six months following the month of service for participating providers. Medicare uses one calendar year. Private insurers set deadlines in the provider contract. Georgia’s state rules apply to Medicaid, Medicare follows federal rules, and private plans follow their contracts, so track all three. For private insurer numbers, use our Georgia insurance companies contact guide.
