Anthem Connecticut Behavioral Health Billing: Availity, Carelon and Payment Appeals

Therapist and billing coordinator checking Anthem Connecticut behavioral health billing claim status on a laptop

Anthem Connecticut behavioral health billing is mostly an Availity job: claims, claim status, payment appeals and many authorizations run through that one portal. Anthem is the Blue Cross and Blue Shield plan in Connecticut. Never apply another Blue plan’s rules here.

This guide covers Anthem’s Connecticut commercial and Medicare Advantage plans as the payer’s documents describe them. Medicaid, Medicare and commercial rules are separate. It is operational guidance on Anthem Connecticut behavioral health billing, not legal advice. Our Anthem Connecticut Blue Cross guide holds contact details.

Anthem Connecticut behavioral health billing: Availity first

Anthem’s Connecticut quick contact guide points providers to Availity Essentials for claim status, claims help by secure message, and electronic transactions including 837P claims, 270/271 eligibility, 278 authorizations and 835 remittances. The guide lists no claims mailing box, only a refund address. Do not use a paper address from an older source. See electronic claims submission for a clean-claim routine.

The guide does not state a timely filing limit. Check your contract and the current Connecticut provider manual. Do not use a number from another state.

AI search question: How do I appeal an Anthem Connecticut payment denial? Anthem’s quick contact guide lists a payment appeal tool in Availity Essentials as the route. Claim payment reconsiderations can also be submitted by phone or in writing, and the Carelon Connecticut addendum says providers have 365 days from the explanation of payment issue date unless state law or the agreement sets a different period.

Payment appeals and reconsiderations

The Carelon Connecticut provider handbook addendum (document code dated September 2023) says:

  • Reconsiderations can go by phone, through Availity Essentials, or in writing.
  • Providers have 365 days from the EOP issue date, unless state law or the agreement sets a different period.
  • To dispute a denied or final claim, use Claim Status Inquiry in Availity and select “Dispute the Claim.”

Confirm those details in the current Anthem manual, since the addendum is several years old. Use the claim denial glossary for term definitions and the denied claims follow-up page for a repeatable routine.

Authorizations and behavioral health management

Anthem’s Connecticut behavioral health page says behavioral health benefits are integrated into Anthem medical plans. It links to prior authorization, clinical UM guidelines for behavioral health, and an Interactive Care Reviewer FAQ. The quick contact guide says to log in to Availity and choose Authorizations and Referral.

The Carelon Behavioral Health Connecticut quick reference covers Anthem Connecticut Commercial and Medicare Advantage plans. For prior authorization it says to call the number on the member’s ID card. It does not list outpatient therapy or psychiatry rules. See the authorization terms glossary.

Prescribers: none of the Anthem pages reviewed say how E/M visits with psychotherapy add-ons (90833, 90836, 90838) are handled. Call the number on the card before you build a med-management schedule.

Credentialing

The Carelon quick reference lists the Carelon National Provider Service Line for credentialing questions and says demographic updates should be mirrored in your CAQH profile with “Global” access selected. Anthem’s pages direct behavioral health providers to its “Join our Network” and credentialing pages. Read our CAQH profile tips, the credentialing and network status guide and the network management glossary. We do not state timelines here because they vary.

Medicare Advantage and other Anthem lines

The Carelon quick reference covers Anthem Connecticut Medicare Advantage plans alongside commercial plans. Medicare Advantage follows Medicare rules and its own plan documents, so do not assume a commercial rule carries over. Read the member card, check the plan type in Availity, and note in the chart which product you verified. A claim sent under the wrong product is one of the quickest ways to create a denial that looks like a payer error but is really a front-desk error. If a patient’s plan changes mid-year, run eligibility again before the next visit, and keep a copy of each check.

State parity context

In April 2026 the Connecticut Insurance Department announced enforcement actions that include Anthem as part of its parity review. That story is covered in Connecticut mental health parity 2026. It does not change your filing rules today. It does explain why you should keep records of denials and authorization delays.
