Savannah Mental Health Billing Service: 5 Easy Checks
A Savannah mental health billing service files insurance claims, posts payments and follows up on denials for therapy and psychiatry practices in Chatham County and along the Georgia coast. The hard part is rarely the claim form. It is knowing whose plan a client is on and which payer rules apply. This guide gives five checks.
Chatham County: what a Savannah mental health billing service should know
Savannah is on the Georgia coast. The U.S. Census Bureau’s QuickFacts page for Savannah lists a population estimate of 149,440 for July 1, 2025 (checked October 24, 2026). A city that size has plenty of room for a solo office, but it does not change the paperwork.
The Georgia Department of Community Health (DCH) groups counties into six Medicaid regions. Its region list places Chatham County in the Southeast region, along with Bryan, Bulloch, Effingham, Glynn and Liberty counties. A Savannah mental health billing service should note the county for every Medicaid client.

Policyholder or client? The check a Savannah mental health billing service runs first
The policyholder, also called the subscriber, is the person who holds the plan. The client is the person you treated. They are often different people, and a claim that mixes them up gets rejected.
The claim form keeps them apart. CMS’s CMS-1500 instructions put the patient’s name in Item 2, the insured’s name in Item 4 (with “SAME” when the patient holds the plan) and the relationship in Item 6. Those instructions cover Medicare, but commercial claims use the same form.
Three common cases in a therapy or psychiatry practice:
- A teenager or young adult on a parent’s plan. Use the parent’s name, birth date and member ID from the card.
- Separated or divorced parents. Confirm which parent’s plan is active before the first visit.
- A client who pays you directly and sends the receipt to the policyholder. Agree in writing who receives any reimbursement.
Run insurance verification before the first session and record the policyholder’s details next to the client’s.
Payer rules a Savannah mental health billing service applies
Keep private, public and state rules in separate notes.
Private payers
Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield is the trade name of Blue Cross Blue Shield Healthcare Plan of Georgia, Inc., an independent licensee of the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, according to an Anthem press release dated May 2025. Its provider site points providers to Availity for authorizations, claims and eligibility. Other Blue Cross Blue Shield plans are separate licensees, so do not apply one plan’s rules to another.
Medicare and Medicaid
CMS lists Palmetto GBA as the Jurisdiction J contractor for Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee. Medicare.gov says claims are due within 12 months of the date of service.
On telehealth, CMS’s telehealth FAQ (updated October 8, 2026) says Medicare telehealth can be received anywhere in the United States through December 31, 2027. It also describes an in-person visit rule for mental health telehealth that applies after that date. Read the FAQ before you build a telehealth schedule.
For Georgia Medicaid, DCH’s Georgia Families page names three care management organizations (CMOs): Amerigroup Community Care, CareSource and Peach State Health Plan. The Georgia Medicaid portal carries a notice posted May 25, 2026 saying providers who had not revalidated are suspended for dates of service from July 1, 2026. Check your status there.
State rules
Code section 33-24-59.5 asks an insurer to pay or explain within 15 working days of an electronic claim and 30 calendar days of a paper claim, with 12 percent annual interest on late payment. The Office of Commissioner of Insurance (OCI) complaint page says providers can use its Consumer Complaint Portal for managed care claims problems.
How do I choose a Savannah mental health billing service?
Ask five questions in writing and compare the answers.
| Check | A solid answer includes |
|---|---|
| 1. Policyholder data | Subscriber and client details captured before the first visit |
| 2. Scope | Who files, posts and works denials, and what you keep |
| 3. Denials | A plan to read remark codes; see how to read CARC and RARC codes |
| 4. Reporting | A monthly view that tracks your clean claim rate |
| 5. Payment checks | A way to spot underpayments |
Claims move electronically, so the service need not sit in Savannah. See our guide to mental health billing services for therapists and who we serve.
What to do Monday morning
- Add policyholder name, birth date and relationship to your client intake sheet.
- Mark Medicaid clients with their county and plan.
- Check your revalidation status in the Georgia Medicaid portal.
- Pull last month’s denials and sort them by payer.
- Send the five questions to each service on your shortlist.

FAQ
Does a practice in Savannah need a local billing service?
No. Claims and reports move electronically. Georgia payer knowledge, written scope and a signed HIPAA business associate agreement matter more than an address.
Which Georgia Medicaid region is Savannah in?
DCH’s region list places Chatham County in the Southeast region. DCH names three CMOs: Amerigroup Community Care, CareSource and Peach State Health Plan. Confirm the plan on the card.
Who is the policyholder on a therapy claim?
The policyholder, or subscriber, holds the plan. The client may be a child, spouse or other dependent. The CMS-1500 form lists the patient and the insured in separate items, so capture both before the first visit.
What is the Medicare filing deadline for a Georgia practice?
Medicare.gov says claims must be filed within 12 months of the date of service. Georgia claims go to Palmetto GBA, the Jurisdiction J contractor.
