Anthem Credentialing for Psychiatrists: 5 Easy Steps

Anthem credentialing for psychiatrists using CAQH ProView

Anthem credentialing for psychiatrists runs through the CAQH ProView profile and Anthem’s online enrollment. Anthem is the Blue Cross and Blue Shield brand of Elevance Health in only some states, so first confirm that your state is an Anthem state. This guide lists the steps Anthem publishes, which of the ten states we serve are Anthem states, and what to confirm. Status is current as of October 17, 2026. Anthem’s pages vary by state, so confirm with the Anthem site for your state.

Which of our ten states are Anthem states

Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans are independent licensees, so never assume one carries over to another. Elevance Health’s Form 10-K for fiscal 2024 says it is the Blue Cross and Blue Shield licensee for Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Missouri (excluding 30 counties in the Kansas City area), Nevada, New Hampshire, New York (the New York City metropolitan area and upstate), Ohio, Virginia (excluding Northern Virginia suburbs) and Wisconsin, and the Blue Cross licensee for California.

Of the ten states we serve, that list names Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia and New York. The other six do not appear on it. HCSC’s affiliates page confirms Illinois and Texas are HCSC Blue Cross and Blue Shield states, not Anthem.

The 5 steps Anthem lists

Anthem’s Colorado and California provider pages give the same CAQH-based process. See the Anthem Colorado join our network page and the Anthem California join our network page:

  • Register with CAQH ProView if you have not.
  • Authorize Anthem to access your CAQH credentialing information.
  • Use Anthem’s quick reference guide or the CAQH help line if you need help.
  • Review and update your CAQH application so every section is complete and accurate.
  • Start online enrollment through the enroll link.

Anthem’s Colorado page lists behavioral health as an application category and adds that chiropractors, acupuncturists, massage therapists and nutritional counselors go through American Specialty Health. We could not open Georgia, Connecticut or New York join pages, so confirm yours.

What a complete application includes

Anthem’s California page lists a signature and application date, current state licenses, education or training for your specialty, hospital privileges, a current DEA or controlled substance certificate, explanations for application questions, five years of work history and current professional liability insurance. For a prescriber, keep the DEA certificate current in CAQH. Our DataSpring profile guide explains the profile, which Anthem’s pages still call CAQH ProView.

Recredentialing

The Anthem California page says Anthem recredentials every three years and that failing to update CAQH or supply required information by the due date can lead to administrative termination. Check your state page for its schedule.

Private-payer rules are separate from Medicare and Medicaid

Anthem credentialing is a private-payer process. Medicare runs through CMS, covered in our Medicare enrollment guide. Medicaid enrollment is state specific, as our Georgia Medicaid enrollment guide shows. See also our psychiatrist credentialing guide.

Type Who handles it What to remember
Private payer credentialing The payer Credentialing and network status are the payer’s decisions
Medicaid enrollment The state Medicaid agency and its managed care plans Separate from private payer credentialing, and it varies by state
Medicare enrollment CMS and your Medicare Administrative Contractor Separate from both

Practical tips for anthem credentialing for psychiatrists

Plan your anthem credentialing for psychiatrists before you need to bill, because the application sits behind the state’s own login. Keep a copy of every anthem credentialing for psychiatrists confirmation, since the state’s records are what a plan checks later. A practice that tracks its anthem credentialing for psychiatrists dates avoids surprise denials. If you hand anthem credentialing for psychiatrists paperwork to a billing partner, keep your own login and records. Treat anthem credentialing for psychiatrists as its own process, separate from Medicare and commercial credentialing. Ask each plan how anthem credentialing for psychiatrists connects to its own contracting before you apply.
