Georgia Medicaid CMO Transition: 4 Dates to Know

Georgia Medicaid CMO transition update for therapists and psychiatrists billing Georgia Families

This Georgia Medicaid CMO transition update covers the state’s re-bid of the care management organization (CMO) contracts that run Georgia Families. For a therapist or psychiatrist who bills Georgia Medicaid, it matters because the plans you are credentialed with could change. This update follows our six-part payer update format. Status is current as of October 17, 2026, based on the Georgia Department of Community Health (DCH) and CMS pages we opened. Confirm each item before you act.

What changed

DCH says the CMO procurement is still in the protest phase pending the Notice of Award, and that it will name the successful suppliers and an implementation timeline after the award. That notice is on the Georgia Families latest news page and was posted April 23, 2026. It also records the December 2, 2024 Notice of Intent to Award to CareSource Georgia, Humana Employers Health Plan of Georgia, Molina Healthcare of Georgia and UnitedHealthcare of Georgia. The current CMOs are Amerigroup, CareSource and Peach State.

When it takes effect

  • December 2, 2024: Notice of Intent to Award issued.
  • June 30, 2027: DCH says it will extend the current Amerigroup, CareSource and Peach State contracts through this date, pending the Notice of Award.
  • December 31, 2026: the Georgia Pathways to Coverage demonstration expires unless renewed or amended, per the CMS demonstration page.
  • January 1, 2027: a CMS letter dated September 25, 2026 says the community engagement requirement takes effect no later than this date. The letter is a CMS Pathways overlay letter.

DCH has not announced a start date for the new CMO contracts, and we found no Notice of Award on the DCH page.

Who it affects

Providers contracted with Amerigroup, Peach State or CareSource are affected, and so are providers who may need to contract with Humana, Molina or UnitedHealthcare if the intended awards stand. Pathways applies to a separate adult coverage group, so check your patients’ coverage type at each visit.

Practical impact for billing practices

Nothing changes for your current plans before the Notice of Award. If the intended awards stand, plans that are not on the award list would drop out and new plans would need credentialing. That outcome is our inference from the award list, not a DCH announcement. Our Georgia Medicaid provider enrollment guide explains why plan credentialing is separate from state enrollment.

What to do next

  • Keep billing Amerigroup, CareSource and Peach State as you do now.
  • Watch the DCH Georgia Families news page for the Notice of Award.
  • Do not start credentialing with a new plan until DCH names the plans and gives a timeline.
  • Verify eligibility at every visit, since Pathways coverage can change after December 31, 2026.

Questions to verify with the payer

  • When will DCH issue the Notice of Award and the implementation timeline?
  • Will the new plans accept existing credentialing applications?
  • Will open claims and prior authorizations carry over?
  • What happens to Pathways members after December 31, 2026?

Georgia Medicaid timely filing and payer rules are separate from Medicare and private insurance. See our Georgia insurance companies contact page for payer lines.

Practical tips for the Georgia Medicaid CMO transition update

Plan your georgia medicaid cmo transition before you need to bill, because the application sits behind the state’s own login. Keep a copy of every georgia medicaid cmo transition confirmation, since the state’s records are what a plan checks later. A practice that tracks its Georgia Medicaid CMO transition update dates avoids surprise denials. If you hand georgia medicaid cmo transition paperwork to a billing partner, keep your own login and records. Treat georgia medicaid cmo transition as its own process, separate from Medicare and commercial credentialing.
