Tennessee Medicaid Provider Enrollment: 3 Easy Steps

Tennessee Medicaid provider enrollment on the TennCare portal for a therapist

Tennessee Medicaid provider enrollment is how a therapist or psychiatrist gets a TennCare Medicaid ID so claims for TennCare members can be paid. TennCare runs the program and registration is electronic. This guide covers the registration steps, why you must contract with each TennCare plan separately, and what to confirm on the official pages. Status is current as of October 17, 2026. Confirm each item on the TennCare site before you act.

How Tennessee Medicaid provider enrollment works

You register through the TennCare Individual Provider Registration Portal. TennCare says registration is electronic and that a Medicaid ID is issued once registration is complete.

A valid Medicaid ID is required to contract with a TennCare managed care organization (MCO), submit Medicare and Medicaid crossover claims, and verify member eligibility, according to the TennCare provider registration page. That makes enrollment the first step for any Tennessee Medicaid billing.

The three steps for an individual provider

The TennCare how-to-apply page lays out the order:

  • Start your individual registration on the TennCare portal with your basic information.
  • Complete the CAQH application. TennCare calls it required for all individual providers.
  • Once both steps are done and you are linked to a group or organization, TennCare sends the new Medicaid ID to your primary email.

The TennCare FAQ says you add your information to the Data Spring (formerly CAQH) roster for TennCare, and that TennCare receives profile updates from Data Spring automatically. Groups and organizations follow a separate path with the Provider Enrollment Application.

What you need before you start

TennCare says individuals need a CAQH ID in attested status so TennCare can receive the information. It recommends updating your CAQH profile with every service location before you register, and it says paper applications and mailed update forms are no longer required.

If you are new to the profile, read our guide to the DataSpring profile for therapists first, and keep your license, NPI and practice locations current there.

TennCare plans credential you separately

A Medicaid ID does not put you in a TennCare plan. TennCare says you must contract with each TennCare MCO separately to be in network and see TennCare members, and that without an active Medicaid ID you cannot be considered for MCO contracting or receive payment.

Each plan sets its own application steps, so check the plan’s provider page for the current process. This is the same split you see with commercial insurers. Our page on credentialed vs. noncredentialed with insurance explains it, and the credentialing and network status guide shows how to track it.

Revalidation and updates

TennCare says individuals with an existing Medicaid ID must register electronically and follow the new-provider steps, and that this is needed only once. The pages we reviewed do not state a recurring revalidation cycle, so check the TennCare site for any change.

Medicaid rules are separate from Medicare and private insurance

Tennessee Medicaid enrollment is a state process. Medicare enrollment runs through CMS, covered in our guide to Medicare enrollment for therapists, and commercial plans credential you on their own. Our guide to getting credentialed with insurance covers the private-payer side. Do not assume a rule from one carries over to the others.

Step Where it happens What to confirm
State Medicaid enrollment The state Medicaid agency’s provider enrollment portal Your provider type, enrollment status and effective date
Managed care plan credentialing Each plan’s credentialing department Network status and contract effective date, which are separate from state enrollment
Medicare CMS and your Medicare Administrative Contractor Medicare enrollment is separate from Medicaid

Practical tips for tennessee medicaid provider enrollment

Plan your tennessee medicaid provider enrollment before you need to bill, because the application sits behind the state’s own login. Keep a copy of every tennessee medicaid provider enrollment confirmation, since the state’s records are what a plan checks later. A practice that tracks its tennessee medicaid provider enrollment dates avoids surprise denials. If you hand tennessee medicaid provider enrollment paperwork to a billing partner, keep your own login and records.
