Indiana Carelon Behavioral Health Billing: 5 Easy Steps

Indiana Carelon behavioral health billing is the work of getting claims paid when Anthem uses Carelon Behavioral Health to manage its behavioral health network in Indiana. Carelon handles contracting and credentialing for that network, while Anthem and Availity Essentials still handle claims, authorizations and eligibility, according to a 2026 Indiana Medicaid presentation. This guide shows who does what, which filing limits that presentation lists, and what to check in your own contract.

Who does what in Indiana Carelon behavioral health billing

Anthem’s Indiana behavioral health notice, dated August 28, 2025, says Carelon manages Anthem’s behavioral health network and that Anthem will continue to manage and administer provider reimbursement rates under Anthem Health Plans. It also says the September 1, 2025 effective date first communicated for the Carelon provider agreement was extended, and that claims processes are unchanged. A session from the 2026 Indiana Health Coverage Programs (IHCP) Works seminar adds the split of duties.

That presentation covers Anthem’s Indiana Medicaid programs: Hoosier Healthwise, the Healthy Indiana Plan, Hoosier Care Connect and Indiana PathWays for Aging. It does not map Carelon’s role to each program, so ask Anthem which route a given member uses. Start with eligibility verification and keep the answer in the chart.

How Indiana Carelon behavioral health billing differs by payer

Private payers

Anthem’s August 2025 notice speaks about Anthem Health Plans in general and does not name products, so do not assume it describes your commercial contract. Read your own agreement and any amendment, and check the contracted rates against what you are paid. If a payment falls short of the contract, treat it as an underpayment. Our payer contract compliance checklist helps you track what each plan owes.

Medicare and Medicaid

For Anthem’s Indiana Medicaid programs, the IHCP Works 2026 session lists these filing limits:

  • New claims: 90 calendar days from the date of service.
  • Corrected claims: 60 calendar days from the date of the explanation of benefits.
  • Disputes: 60 calendar days from the explanation of benefits.
  • Appeals: 60 calendar days from the dispute response.

The session also lists Availity Essentials payer IDs of 00630 for professional claims and 00130 for institutional claims. Confirm both with Anthem before you load them. For Medicare, Medicare.gov lists psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, clinical social workers, marriage and family therapists and mental health counselors among outpatient mental health providers. Medicare follows its own rules.

State rules

Credentialing in Indiana has a state rule that many states lack. A UnitedHealthcare state-requirements compendium, revised 9/2026, says Indiana insurers, HMOs and PPOs must use the CAQH uniform application, with deadlines for notifying providers about deficient applications. Keep your CAQH profile complete and attested so a gap does not stall the Carelon process. Our guide to insurance credentialing for therapists covers the steps.

How do you bill Anthem behavioral health claims in Indiana?

For Indiana Carelon behavioral health billing, submit claims to Anthem through Availity Essentials, not to Carelon, according to the 2026 IHCP Works session. Carelon handles network and credentialing questions, and Anthem handles claim status and authorizations. Keep the filing limits for your program and confirm the payer ID before you send.

A checklist for Indiana Carelon behavioral health billing

  2. Confirm your Carelon agreement and your effective date in writing.
  3. Load the correct payer ID and test one claim.
  4. Read each remittance with our guide to electronic remittance advice and compare the allowed amount to your contract.
  5. Track first-pass payment with your clean claim rate, and log every Carelon or Anthem contact with a date and name.

What to do Monday morning

Use this short list to put Indiana Carelon behavioral health billing on a routine.

  1. List your Anthem patients and the program for each.
  2. Find your Carelon agreement, the date you received it, and any response deadline.
  3. Pull the last month of Anthem remittances and compare three paid claims to your contracted rate.
  4. Add each program’s 90-day and 60-day limits to a one-page chart at the billing desk.

The short version: Indiana Carelon behavioral health billing

Indiana Carelon behavioral health billing splits the work: Carelon runs the network and credentialing, and Anthem takes claims through Availity Essentials. Verify the program, hold a written agreement, watch the filing limits and compare payments to your contract.
