Florida Therapist Credentialing: 6 Easy Essential Steps

Florida therapist credentialing is the process of getting each payer to verify your license and background and approve you for its network. It is separate from Florida licensing and separate from billing. Every payer runs its own process, so plan to repeat the work.

What Florida therapist credentialing covers

Credentialing proves to a payer that you are who you say you are and are allowed to practice. Enrollment, the payer’s step that adds you to its system, usually follows. Our credentialing service page explains where credentialing fits in billing, and our guide to insurance credentialing for therapists covers the general steps. This post adds the Florida specifics.

Six steps for Florida therapist credentialing

Do the first two steps once, then repeat steps three through five for each payer. Step six never ends.

StepWhat to do
1. LicenseConfirm your Florida license is active and check it on the Department of Health license search
2. Provider dataHold a National Provider Identifier (NPI) and keep your CAQH profile complete
3. MedicaidEnroll with the Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) if you will see Medicaid patients
4. Medicaid plansApply to each managed care plan you want to join
5. Commercial payersApply to Florida Blue and other commercial payers through their processes
6. MaintenanceRe-attest, revalidate and recredential on each payer’s schedule

How does Florida therapist credentialing work with the state?

State rules

Mental health counselors, marriage and family therapists and clinical social workers are licensed through the Florida Board of Clinical Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy and Mental Health Counseling. The board’s site links to the Department of Health license search, where payers and you can verify status. Payers will check your license, so fix any gaps before you apply. Florida therapist credentialing cannot start until the license is active.

Medicare and Medicaid

Florida Medicaid enrollment runs through AHCA’s provider enrollment page. It tells you to use the Enrollment Readiness Tool to find your provider type, required documents and screening level, then apply through the Florida MMIS Provider Portal. Providers must complete Level 2 background screening at enrollment and again at revalidation. The page lists enrollment categories, including rendering-only providers who work under a group’s billing privileges. It gives no processing times, so ask AHCA provider services about status instead of guessing.

Medicaid managed care plans then credential you separately. AHCA’s January 2025 program snapshot lists what plans require: eligibility to take part in Medicaid, a current provider agreement with AHCA, an NPI, a current license, no sanctions, and a Level 2 background check. It also says a plan must give written notice, with a reason, to a provider it declines to put in its network. Medicare is a separate program with its own enrollment, which this post does not cover.

Private payers

Florida Blue is an independent licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, and its August 2023 notice explains how it handles credentialing. Two credentials verification organizations, Medversant and Verisys, may contact providers, and Florida Blue asks professional providers to respond promptly and to re-attest to their CAQH profile at least every 120 days. The notice also says the process follows National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) standards, which call for recredentialing every three years. CAQH, which now operates as DataSpring, is where you keep that profile. Other commercial payers set their own steps, so check each one. Our insurance companies contact directory helps you find the right department.

In network or out of network

You do not have to join every network. Some practices stay out of network and bill that way. Read our comparison of in-network and out-of-network credentialing and our guide to out-of-network billing for therapists before you decide, because the choice affects fees, patient costs and paperwork. Contracts matter too, so use the checks in payer contract compliance once you receive one.

How long does Florida therapist credentialing take?

No payer in this post publishes a fixed time, and AHCA’s enrollment page gives none. Start early, track every application, and do not schedule patients under a payer’s rates until you have an effective date in writing. A missing or out-of-date field in your profile is a common reason an application stalls, so keep your data clean and watch your clean claim rate after you join a network.

What to do Monday morning

  1. Check that your Florida license is active and that the name and address match your CAQH profile.
  2. Open your CAQH profile, update it and note the date you last attested.
  3. List the payers you want, and note which need Medicaid enrollment first.
  4. Start the AHCA Readiness Tool if you will see Medicaid patients.
  5. Keep one tracker with each payer, the date you applied, the contact and the written response.

The short version: Florida therapist credentialing

Florida therapist credentialing starts with an active license and a complete CAQH profile. Enroll with AHCA for Medicaid, then apply to each plan and each commercial payer. Re-attest and recredential on schedule, and keep every response in writing.

FAQ

Do I need Florida Medicaid enrollment before joining a Medicaid plan?

AHCA’s snapshot lists eligibility to take part in Medicaid and a current provider agreement with AHCA among the requirements for plan network providers. Start with AHCA enrollment, then apply to each plan.

How often must I update my CAQH profile for Florida Blue?

Florida Blue’s August 2023 notice asks professional providers to re-attest to their CAQH profile at least every 120 days. Check the current provider manual too.

Does Florida Blue handle credentialing itself?

It uses credentials verification organizations. The August 2023 notice names Medversant and Verisys as authorized agents that may contact providers. Respond promptly to avoid delays.

Can I bill a payer while my application is pending?

Do not assume so. Ask each payer in writing whether services before your effective date can be billed, and confirm what status the payer needs to see.
