What is the CMS place of service code set?

The place of service (POS) code set is the official list of two-digit codes CMS publishes to show where a service was provided. Every claim line carries one POS code, and payers use it to decide coverage and the payment rate. The Place of Service Code Set on CMS.gov runs from 01 to 99. As of the page modified 02/17/2026, 52 of those codes are assigned and the rest are reserved.

Mental health billing

The codes therapists and psychiatrists use most

Office and home: POS 11 and 12

POS 11 is the office. POS 12 is the patient’s private residence, in person. Assisted living (13), group home (14) and custodial care (33) are separate codes.

Telehealth: POS 10 and 02

POS 10 is telehealth with the patient at home. POS 02 is telehealth with the patient anywhere else. Both are on the CMS list.

Mental health facilities: POS 51–58

The list includes inpatient psychiatric (51), partial hospitalization (52), community mental health center (53), residential and non-residential substance use settings and more. Payer rules vary.

Does every payer accept every place of service code?
