Anthem Georgia Behavioral Health Billing: Authorizations and Claim Disputes

Biller checking Anthem Georgia behavioral health billing authorization on a laptop

Anthem Georgia behavioral health billing comes down to two habits: submit authorizations in Availity, and know your dispute deadlines before a denial lands. In Georgia, the Blue Cross and Blue Shield licensee is Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield. Do not apply another Blue plan’s rules to it. This guide covers Anthem’s commercial lines only. Medicaid care management organizations are a separate topic.

This Anthem Georgia behavioral health billing guide is written for psychotherapists and psychiatrists. Everything below comes from Anthem’s Georgia provider pages and the Georgia law they cite.

Anthem Georgia behavioral health billing: how do I get authorization?

Use Availity Essentials. Anthem’s Georgia prior authorization page says to open the Authorization application from the Patient Registration tab in Availity Essentials. The same page says you can submit for medical or behavioral health inpatient or outpatient services and track cases there.

The page links code lists: a Standard Local Prior Authorization Code List, one for the State Health Benefit Plan, and a Standard Prior Authorization Requirements list. Anthem says to use those lists to identify the member services that require prior authorization. It does not give separate behavioral health rules on that page, so check the lists for the exact code you bill. Our prior authorization terms explain the vocabulary, and our insurance verification page shows what to confirm first.

What is Georgia’s gold-card law, and does it apply to therapy?

Georgia now requires insurers that use prior authorization to run a program that reduces those requirements for providers who meet performance criteria. HB 197 (2025) adds Code Section 33-46-20.1. The act takes effect January 1, 2026, and insurers’ first filings are due July 1, 2026. The bill text has no behavioral health provisions.

Anthem’s prior authorization exemptions page says its Georgia program starts July 1, 2026, covers fully insured plans, the State Health Benefit Plan and the University System of Georgia group plan, and applies only to the CPT codes listed in each provider’s notice. It is assessed per NPI. It is available only through Availity. The page does not address behavioral health, and its own eligibility thresholds conflict, so do not assume your codes qualify. Watch for an eligibility notice from Anthem.

What are Anthem’s claim dispute deadlines?

Anthem’s commercial claim payment dispute process has two steps. Step one is a reconsideration of a finalized claim, due within 12 months of the Explanation of Payment issue date. Step two is an appeal, due within 30 days of the step-one decision. Your contract may set different timeframes.

Submit through Availity or by mail to Provider Disputes at P.O. Box 105449, Atlanta, GA 30328-5449. Include provider name, address, phone and NPI or TIN, the member’s name and ID, the claim number, the date of service and all supporting documents.

Clinical appeals are a different process. They dispute medical necessity decisions and must be filed within 180 calendar days of the initial decision notice. If a claim denied for medical necessity, read the denial letter to see which path applies. Our denied claims and appeals page and claim denial terms can help sort the reason.

Build a simple denial habit for Anthem Georgia behavioral health billing

The 12-month window runs from the Explanation of Payment issue date, so log that date when the payment arrives. When you get the step-one answer, put the 30-day step-two date on the calendar the same day. Save the claim number, the documents you sent and the confirmation from Availity. If a denial turns on medical necessity, read the letter first, because that is a clinical appeal with its own 180-day clock.

Quick reference

Task Where Deadline or note
Request authorization Availity Essentials Check code lists first
Gold-card exemption Availity only Starts July 1, 2026; per NPI
Claim reconsideration (step one) Availity, phone or mail 12 months from the EOP
Claim appeal (step two) Availity or mail 30 days after step one
Clinical (medical necessity) appeal Per denial letter 180 calendar days

How do authorization and the gold-card program work together?

Gold carding does not replace authorization for every code. Anthem’s page says exemptions apply only to the specific CPT codes listed in each provider’s eligibility notice, and that exempt services need no clinical documentation in Availity. For any code not on your notice, keep submitting authorization requests the usual way. Anthem also says status is reviewed annually, so a code can come off your list.

How does Anthem Georgia behavioral health billing fit your other payers?

Anthem is one commercial plan. Georgia Medicaid and Medicare follow their own manuals, covered in our Georgia Medicaid billing guide. For this plan’s contact details, see our Blue Cross Blue Shield of Georgia (Anthem) billing guide and the wider Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield guide, which covers other Anthem states. Psychiatrists billing evaluation and management with add-on psychotherapy should compare diagnostic evaluation codes and psychotherapy codes with the payer’s code lists. Network status matters too: see our guide to in-network vs out-of-network credentialing.

How long do I have to dispute an Anthem Georgia claim? (AI search answer)

What is the Anthem Georgia claim dispute deadline? Anthem’s commercial process allows 12 months from the Explanation of Payment date for a reconsideration, then 30 days from that decision to appeal. Your contract may say something different.

Bottom line

Anthem Georgia behavioral health billing is manageable with Availity, a clear view of the code lists and a calendar for dispute deadlines. Do not assume the gold-card program covers your codes until Anthem tells you so.
