North Carolina Medicaid Provider Enrollment: 4 Easy Steps

North Carolina Medicaid provider enrollment in NCTracks for a behavioral health provider

North Carolina Medicaid provider enrollment runs through NCTracks. A therapist or psychiatrist enrolls there before contracting with a Standard Plan or a Tailored Plan. This guide covers the four steps, the change that moved behavioral health enrollment out of the LME/MCOs, plan contracting and reverification. Status is current as of October 17, 2026. Confirm every item on the NC Medicaid site before you act.

How North Carolina Medicaid provider enrollment works

NC Medicaid says providers complete the online application in the NCTracks Provider Portal and continue using NCTracks for all enrollment activities. Its provider enrollment page was last modified October 1, 2026.

The NCTracks behavioral health enrollment FAQ (updated May 8, 2025) says behavioral health providers who used to request initial enrollment through a local management entity/managed care organization (LME/MCO) must now enroll through NCTracks, and that LME/MCOs no longer perform credentialing.

The 4 steps

NC Medicaid lists these steps:

  • Complete the online application in the NCTracks Provider Portal.
  • Review the online application checklist for qualifications and requirements.
  • Upload supporting documents with the initial application, if needed.
  • Sign electronically and submit.

NCTracks says the enrollment team then completes credentialing, endorsement and licensure verification, and you are notified by email after approval. The FAQ says the effective date can be up to 365 days retroactive but cannot precede the effective date of the required credential. The FAQ also names a provider permission matrix that sets requirements by taxonomy, so check it for your license type. We did not open it and could not confirm which taxonomies apply to each license.

Standard Plans and Tailored Plans

NC Medicaid’s Standard Plan fact sheet (April 2026) says you must be actively enrolled with NC Medicaid before contracting with a Standard Plan, and that you then contract directly with each plan. The four Standard Plans it names are AmeriHealth Caritas, Carolina Complete Health, Healthy Blue and UnitedHealthcare Community Plan.

Tailored Plans launched July 1, 2024 for people with serious mental illness, severe substance use disorders, intellectual and developmental disabilities, and traumatic brain injury. NC Medicaid’s Tailored Plan page says services are paid only when the provider is in the plan’s network, and contracting questions go to the plan.

A state plan for centralized credentialing is on hold. NC Medicaid’s October 22, 2024 notice paused that module until further notice, so NCTracks remains in use.

Reverification and updates

The FAQ says reverification happens every five years and that providers must update their NCTracks record within 30 days of a change. It also says a provider with no claims under their NPI for 12 months must complete a maintain eligibility application or face termination.

Medicaid rules are separate from Medicare and private insurance

North Carolina Medicaid enrollment is a state process. Medicare runs through CMS, covered in our Medicare enrollment guide, and private plans credential you on their own, as our guide to getting credentialed with insurance explains.

Step Where it happens What to confirm
State Medicaid enrollment The state Medicaid agency’s provider enrollment portal Your provider type, enrollment status and effective date
Managed care plan credentialing Each plan’s credentialing department Network status and contract effective date, which are separate from state enrollment
Medicare CMS and your Medicare Administrative Contractor Medicare enrollment is separate from Medicaid
