Florida Medicaid Provider Enrollment for Therapists and Psychiatrists

Florida Medicaid provider enrollment is how a therapist or psychiatrist gets approved to bill Florida Medicaid or to join a Medicaid health plan network. The Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) runs it, and you apply online. This guide covers the steps, the enrollment types, background screening and the separate plan contracting that follows. Status is current as of October 15, 2026. Confirm each item on the AHCA site before you act. This is operational guidance, not legal advice.
How Florida Medicaid provider enrollment works
AHCA’s Bureau of Medicaid Provider Enrollment handles initial enrollment, revalidation, changes of information and reactivation. Start with the AHCA provider enrollment page. Its Enrollment Readiness Tool identifies your provider type, enrollment category, required documents and screening level. Applications go through the Florida MMIS Provider Portal. For help, call 1-800-289-7799, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. ET.
The online process, per AHCA’s enrollment knowledge base:
- Choose an enrollment type, provider type and specialty.
- Check the interactive enrollment checklist for required documents.
- Complete the online enrollment wizard. Your legal name must match your license, and service locations cannot be P.O. boxes.
- Upload supporting documents as PDF or TIF.
- Accept the enrollment agreement and submit.
AHCA verifies credentials and may make a site visit. Your practice must be fully operational before you enroll. You receive an approval or denial letter, then a welcome letter with your Medicaid ID.
Pick the right type of Florida Medicaid provider enrollment
AHCA lists three enrollment types. Fully Enrolled means you can bill Medicaid directly, join a health plan network or both. Limited Enrolled means health plan network only. Rendering-Only/Performing (ROPA) requires an active Florida Department of Health license, and ROPA enrollees cannot bill fee-for-service. See the ROPA enrollment FAQ.
AHCA’s provider type and specialty list shows psychiatry (specialty 042), child psychiatry (043), psychiatric and mental health clinical nurse specialist (076), mental health targeted case management (Type 32) and community mental health services (Type 05). The list does not show psychologists, clinical social workers, marriage and family therapists or mental health counselors as separate provider types, so use the Enrollment Readiness Tool to confirm the category for your license.
Background screening in Florida Medicaid provider enrollment
Risk levels are limited, moderate or high by provider type under 42 CFR 455.450. Level 2 background screening applies at enrollment and at revalidation under section 408.809, Florida Statutes. Each person named on the application needs a current eligible screening in the Clearinghouse. Plan this step early, because missing screenings stall applications.
Health plans credential you separately
Florida Medicaid provider enrollment is the first step. Most Florida Medicaid members are in Statewide Medicaid Managed Care (SMMC) plans, and you contract with each plan you want to join. AHCA’s pages describe Limited Enrolled status as “health plan network only.” AHCA publishes SMMC plan lists, and rosters change, so check the current list and each plan’s credentialing process. Our credentialing and network status guide explains the difference between being enrolled and being in-network.
Filing limits and 2026 notes
For fee-for-service claims, AHCA refers to a 12-month claim submission limit, with exceptions submitted through the portal. See AHCA provider services. Plan filing limits are set by contract. Private insurers follow a different clock; see our Florida prompt pay law guide.
AHCA’s enrollment pages say a new provider enrollment system was scheduled for 2026. Use the system the portal sends you to, and watch AHCA notices for changes to your Florida Medicaid provider enrollment steps.
