Stamford Mental Health Billing Service: 5 Easy Essentials
A Stamford mental health billing service handles insurance claims for therapy and psychiatry practices in Stamford, Connecticut, from claim submission to payment posting and denial follow-up. A solo practice has no billing staff, so the clinician absorbs every denial. This guide shows the Connecticut payer mix and five essentials to confirm before you hand off billing.
What a Stamford mental health billing service has to sort out first
A Stamford mental health billing service has to match each claim to its payer type, because commercial, Medicare and HUSKY Health claims follow different rules. The payer type decides where the claim goes, how long you have to file and who answers a denial. Sort your caseload into those groups before you compare vendors.
Private payers
Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield is the trade name of Anthem Health Plans, Inc. in Connecticut. Its September 2023 press release calls it an independent licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association. It is a different company from the Blue plans in other states, so never carry one Blue plan’s rule over to another.
A Carelon Behavioral Health Connecticut addendum (September 2023) covers Anthem plans and says Carelon handles utilization management for Anthem. It sends claim submission rules to the Anthem provider manual and allows reconsideration requests within 365 days of the explanation of payment, unless state law or your agreement says otherwise.
ConnectiCare runs a provider portal and posts a notice about its 2026 integration with Molina Healthcare. Watch that page for billing changes. Keep payer phone lines in our insurance companies contact directory, and read mental health insurance billing for the full claim cycle.
Medicare and Medicaid
Original Medicare claims from Connecticut go to National Government Services, Inc., the contractor for Jurisdiction K, according to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). Medicare.gov lists psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, clinical social workers, marriage and family therapists and mental health counselors among covered outpatient mental health providers.
Connecticut Medicaid runs through the Connecticut Medical Assistance Program (CMAP). Its provider portal is run by Gainwell Technologies for the Department of Social Services (DSS), and covers enrollment, billing manuals and eligibility checks.
Behavioral health for HUSKY Health members sits with the Connecticut Behavioral Health Partnership, where Carelon Behavioral Health is the administrative services organization for DSS and two other state agencies.
That Carelon role is separate from the Carelon work for Anthem above. Different programs, different manuals. Under DSS’s regulation 17b-262-529, claims go in electronically no later than twelve months after the service date. The regulation lists exceptions for retroactive eligibility, payment disputes and third-party insurer delay.
State rules
The Connecticut Insurance Department’s Bulletin HC-132 (April 2024) sets the prompt payment standard under section 38a-816(15). Insurers should pay electronic claims within 20 days and paper claims within 60, with interest if they pay late. Missing information and a few listed disputes can delay payment.
The Department’s mental health benefits guide says state insurance laws cover fully insured plans, not self-insured employer plans. Ask which type each client has before you cite a state rule to a payer.
On telehealth, a legislative summary of Public Act 24-110 says carriers may not cut reimbursement for covered services delivered by telehealth instead of in person. A 2023 legislative report says Medicaid pays telehealth at the in-person level.

Five essentials for a Stamford mental health billing service
Use the same five questions with every Stamford mental health billing service you compare. Write the answers down.
| Essential | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| 1. Payer type | Fully insured, self-insured, Medicare or HUSKY Health, for each client, through insurance verification |
| 2. Behavioral health administrator | Who authorizes and reprocesses claims for each plan, from the member card |
| 3. Enrollment | CMAP enrollment for Medicaid, plus payer credentialing for each commercial plan |
| 4. Filing and payment clocks | The table below, plus the clock in each contract |
| 5. Out of network and reports | Whether the service bills out-of-network claims, plus a monthly paid, denied and open view |
Connecticut clocks for a Stamford practice
These clocks come from the sources above. Track each one by date of service, and keep Medicaid and commercial claims on separate lists.
| Clock | What the source says |
|---|---|
| 20 days | Insurer payment target for an electronic claim (Bulletin HC-132) |
| 60 days | Insurer payment target for a paper claim (Bulletin HC-132) |
| 365 days | Reconsideration window in the Carelon addendum for Anthem plans, unless state law or your agreement differs |
| 12 months | Latest filing date for a CMAP claim, with listed exceptions (regulation 17b-262-529) |
How do I choose a Stamford mental health billing service?
Pick a service that can name the payer types in your caseload, show how it tracks filing deadlines for each, and send a written report every month. Ask for a sample report and a HIPAA business associate agreement before any client record moves. Get fee terms in writing, and confirm that the service bills in Connecticut.
What to do Monday morning
- Export your client list with each payer and plan type.
- Mark every HUSKY Health client and every Anthem client.
- Write the filing window next to each payer name.
- Read an electronic remittance advice from your largest payer to see what it denied.
- Record your clean claim rate so you can judge any change.
The short version: Stamford mental health billing service
A Stamford mental health billing service has to handle commercial, Medicare and HUSKY Health claims under different rules. Confirm payer type, behavioral health administrator, enrollment and filing clock for each client, and get reports and fees in writing.
