Credentialing With Aetna: 4 Easy Steps for Therapists
Credentialing with Aetna starts with a request, not an application. Aetna’s page tells behavioral health clinicians to complete a request for participation form, and Aetna then decides whether it needs providers in your area. This guide walks therapists and psychiatrists through the four steps Aetna lists, checked against its page on 10/25/26.

Credentialing with Aetna: how the process starts
Credentialing with Aetna means Aetna verifies your license, training and standing, then contracts with you so you can bill as an in-network provider. Aetna describes a general process in four steps. It does not give a timeline for individual clinicians, so do not plan your first month of clients around one. Ask Aetna for the current status of your request instead.
Step 1: Submit the request for participation
Behavioral health professionals complete the request for participation form on Aetna’s join the network page. This is the first gate. Filing the form does not guarantee a contract. Keep a copy of what you submitted and the date, because you will need it if you follow up.
Step 2: Aetna decides whether it needs providers
Aetna checks whether it currently needs providers to serve its members in your area. It then decides whether contracting, credentialing or both are required. This is why a closed or full network can stop a strong application. If Aetna says it does not need providers right now, ask when it reviews the area again.
Step 3: Contracting and credentialing
After contracting, if credentialing applies, Aetna obtains your application from CAQH ProView. You must have a ProView application and you must designate Aetna as an authorized health plan so Aetna can access it. The page says so directly. Before you submit anything, open your profile and check your license, liability coverage and work history. See what a CAQH ID is and six CAQH mistakes that hold up credentialing.
Step 4: Finalize the contract
When credentialing is complete, your contract is finalized and you receive welcome materials. Read the Participation Agreement and note your Effective Date. Do not bill Aetna members as in-network before that date is confirmed in writing. For the full picture, see in-network vs out-of-network credentialing.
Private payers, Medicare and Medicaid, and state rules
- Private payer (Aetna): Aetna sets its own network needs, contract terms and rates. What applies to Aetna does not apply to other insurers.
- Medicare and Medicaid: enrollment is separate. Aetna credentialing does not enroll you in Medicare or your state Medicaid program. Check CMS.gov and your state Medicaid agency.
- State law: licensure, scope of practice and telehealth rules vary by state. Confirm with your licensing board.
Therapists and psychiatrists: what differs
The request and credentialing path is the same, but the contract is not. Psychiatrists are paid on evaluation and management (E/M) codes plus add-on codes, so review the rate for each code you bill. Aetna’s page also tells individual providers to apply with a Type 1 NPI. See our psychiatrist credentialing guide.
Common reasons a request stalls
- CAQH is out of date, or Aetna is not authorized to view it
- The area does not currently need more providers
- Your license type does not match what Aetna credentials
- You bill before the effective date is confirmed
The short version
- Submit the request for participation first.
- Expect Aetna to check its network need before it credentials you.
- Authorize Aetna in CAQH and keep the profile current.
- Confirm the effective date. Credentialing with Aetna is not finished until the contract is.
- MCM South can help with the application. See our credentialing service.
